Currently, PDX Doulas services are assigned by OHSU and not chosen by the client.

If you are able to hire your doula prenatally, here are some general guidelines. A good personality fit for you and your family is critical. Consider whether you and your partner will feel comfortable with your doula team and feel supported throughout labor.

To choose a PDX Doula:

Step 1: Choose to use an apprentice doula or a certified doula.

Step 2: Read the biographies of the doulas and make a short list of the doulas that appear to match your birth wishes.

Step 3: Conduct a telephone interview, ask the following questions:

  • What training and education do you have?
  • What is your philosophy about childbirth and supporting women and partners through labor?
  • When do you try to join women in labor-at our home or at the place of birth?
  • Who else is on your doula team? When can we meet them?
  • What is your fee?

Step 4: Conduct an in person interview.

  • Are they compatible with you?
  • Are they kind, enthusiastic, warm, knowledgable, good listeners, good communicators and willing to learn?
  • Are they comfortable with your birthing choices?
  • Do you feel at ease with them?

The way you feel with a doula is more important than the number of births that they have attended. You may want to interview more than one doula team and make comparisons before choosing your doula.
