Our History
PDX Doulas started as a dream in October 2000 of five beginning doulas to serve birthing mothers at OHSU. Through the enormous help of the OHSU midwives, OHSU's Volunteer Services and doula volunteers, we served our first family in June of 2001.
We served 12 hour shifts on the weekends only and met with birthing women at the hospital. Since then, we have aided over 150 births at OHSU in a variety of situations including high risk births, VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean), waterbirths, and fetal demises. We have each seen the improved birth outcomes that are the benefit of birth doula care.
In June 2007, we began a new journey in collaboration with OHSU Midwifery services and CareOregon to expand our services and provide 24/7 on call doula care to OHSU patients. Through a generous grant by CareOregon, we are providing FREE doula care to laboring women. Our doulas will receive a small reimbursement for their generous gift of time and talent. We have funding until April of 2009 and are approved to attend 20 births per months. To seek further funding we will need to show improved birth outcomes and will be evaluated on medical interventions as well as staff and client satisfaction.
We have a rich past and are looking forward to greater service in our future.
Birth Blessings!
